Steps to Apply

A new student is someone who has never attended VGCC to obtain college credit.

01 – Choose Your Program of Study

VGCC has a variety of degrees, diplomas and certificates to get you ready for a career or college transfer. You can explore all of our programs and areas of study to find the best one for you.

02 – Apply for Admission

Complete an application for admission . Within the application, you will complete the residency process with the Residency Determination Service (RDS). You will receive a Residency Certification Number (RCN), which you should include in your application.

03 – Apply for Financial Aid & Scholarships

Complete your FAFSA at www.studentaid.gov , our school code is 009903. After you are accepted to the school and your financial aid information has been received, you can check your myVGCC account for information about your financial aid status.

We also offer scholarships from generous donors to our VGCC Foundation, as well as from sources outside of the college who want to see our students succeed as well. Find out about our various scholarships!

04 – Submit Your Transcripts

Request official transcripts from all previous schools attended (high school, high school equivalency, and college transcripts).

Official transcripts must be submitted via an electronic transcript service or mailed in a sealed envelope. Students who received their High School Equivalency (HSE), formally GED, with VGCC will request official transcripts through www.diplomasender.com. Please note that DiplomaSender will not work with Internet Explorer.

Official transcripts from accredited colleges and universities may be evaluated for transfer credit.

05 – Determine Placement Testing

Vance-Granville employs North Carolina RISE (Reinforced Instruction for Student Excellence) and NCCCS recommendations. Students enrolling for the first time at VGCC who have graduated from a United States High School, (have successfully completed Math 2 or its equivalent, and have a valid high school GPA) will be placed into gateway English and Math courses using their unweighted high school grade point average (GPA). Placement will be determined using the following criteria:

• Students with a 2.8 unweighted High School Grade Point Average or higher will be eligible to go directly into their required gateway courses with no required corequisite.
• Students with a 2.2-2.79 unweighted GPA will be eligible to go directly into their required gateway courses with a corequisite.
• Students with 2.199 or lower unweighted GPA will be enrolled in a one semester transition English and one semester transition Math course.
• High school graduates who did not successfully complete Math 2 or its equivalent while in high school will be enrolled in a one semester transition English course and one semester transition Math course.

06 – Attend Orientation

After you have received your acceptance letter and have been assigned a student ID number, you are ready to sign up for new student orientation. During your session, you will set up your Vanguard ID and gain access to all of your VGCC tools.

07 – Meet with an Academic Advisor

Meet with an Academic Advisor virtually or at any campus location. Once you have been advised, be sure to register for classes, finalize financial aid or pay tuition, then purchase books and be ready for classes to start. You’re a Vanguard!
