Nobody dreams of working in logistics when they’re a child. It’s not a field that many people are aware of. The fact of the matter is, it’s an industry that plays a HUGE role in our economy. Next, there aren’t enough candidates to fill logistics positions. This behind-the-scenes career field is often overlooked by aspiring business professionals. Everyone knows about careers in marketing or finance, but careers in logistics tend to fly under the radar. As a result, employers and recruiters have trouble filling these positions. As a logistician, so many other people in Supply Chain Management will depend on you. It’s your diligence and planning that will allow everyone else to do their job.

According to, U.S. News & World Report it’s has dubbed logistician the “Best Business Job” ranked number six on their list and number 26 on their 100 Best Jobs list. Several factors contribute to these rankings, including median salary, job prospects and stress level. With recognition like this, it’s no wonder you’re interested in pursuing this profession.

Program Details

  1. Students will be able to identify the different segments of logistics and use the terminology of the industry
  2. Students will be able to identify modes of transportation, interpret governing regulations, and describe the principles and terminology used in the transportation industry.
  3. Students will be able to describe the role of warehouses and distribution centers, apply industry principles and terminology, and understand distribution productivity measures.
  4. Students will be able to identify the supply chain units, and describe the materials management processes.
  5. Students will be able to demonstrate their ability to perform import/export operations, channels of distribution, and associate with operating a secure supply chain.
  6. Students will be able to describe and apply the principles and terminology used in procurement including electronic data interchange services.
  7. Students will be able to describe global sourcing, shipping, tracking, and e-logistics systems necessary to operate inbound/outbound logistics in a global market.

Students enrolled in pre-approved continuing education training courses may request awarded credit in corresponding curriculum programs. They must first register, pay, and pass the continuing education course with a grade of satisfactory. In order to request awarded credit, the student must be enrolled in the corresponding curriculum program.

The credit will be awarded by the appropriate department with a grade of “PR”, Credit for Prior Learning. The credit hours of the course will count toward graduation at VGCC but may not transfer to other colleges or universities.
