Only VGCC students pursing the LPN to ADN Transition program are eligible to take the RN Fundamentals exam. A minimum score of Level 1 is required.

If you have had a name change since creating your ATI account, please contact ATI to ensure that your name matches exactly what is on your ID used for testing.

Please note that a credit card photo, temporary license, or student ID do not meet these criteria.

Students must schedule a meeting with a Health Sciences Advisor and be approved to register for this exam!

Notice to Students: Your advisor will notify the Testing Center of your eligibility to take the test. Once the center is notified, you will receive an email to your VGCC Email Account with instructions regarding registration for the RN Fundamentals Test.

Students are admitted to the LPN to ADN Transition Program in accordance with the policies set by Vance-Granville Community College. Each applicant is required to meet the minimum requirements as set by the college. Meeting minimum requirements does not guarantee admission into a program, only an opportunity for consideration.

The RN Fundamentals 2019 Proctored Assessment is the entrance test administered to prospective LPN to ADN Transition Program students that currently maintain a license as a Practical Nurse. A score of Level 1 or higher is required to be considered for admission into the program. The Fundamentals exam may only be taken three times and is administered at the Main Campus.

RN Content Mastery Series 2019 Proctored Fundamentals Test Description (ATI Testing.Com)

This 70-item test offers an assessment of basic comprehension and mastery of fundamental principles for nursing practice including:

  • Foundations of practice (health care delivery, thinking strategies for nursing practice, communication, professional standards, legal and ethical responsibilities, nursing through the lifespan)
  • Basic nursing care (admission, transfer and discharge processes, medication administration and error prevention, safety, ergonomic principles, asepsis and infection control, comfort, basic needs, wound care)
  • Support of psychosocial needs (therapeutic communication, coping, family, cultural and spiritual health, end-of-life care)
  • Support of physiologic needs (oxygenation, circulatory, fluid and electrolytes, acid-base balance, elimination, neurosensory, mobility)
  • Health assessment (assessment of vital signs, general and system specific assessments, risk reduction)

YES. The fee for testing is $45.00 Test fees must be paid in advance through myVGCC or in the VGCC Business Office in Building 1 on the Main Campus in Henderson.

Practice tests are not available to students at this time and students are encouraged to prepare using the Fundamentals of Nursing Edition 11.0 at a cost of $60.

You will have 70 minutes to answer 70 questions on the assessment.

You must bring with you an official picture ID. (Examples: driver’s license, passport). See information above.

You must also bring your Admissions ticket with your ATI Account log-in information. You must create an account with ATI prior to your test date in order to take the test. There will not be time to create the account on the day of the test. CHECK YOUR USERNAME AND PASSWORD BEFORE THE TEST DAY!

The admissions ticket will be included in the email sent to you from the testing center staff and it will need to be filled out prior to being seated for testing. You may need to check your spam folder for this email 2-3 days before the exam date.

Paper and pencil will be provided.

Calculators are NOT allowed.

Headphones and ear plugs are prohibited unless it has been approved as an accommodation.

No food, drinks, tobacco products, cell phones, smart watches, beepers, pagers, or children are allowed in the Testing Center.

You must use your VGCC email address to contact the testing center as that is the email address that will be used to send pertinent information to students regarding your testing appointment. You may need to check your spam folder for this email. If you have not received an email 5-7 days before your appointment, please email the testing center at testingcenter@vgcc.edu .

Test results are available immediately upon completion of the test. A Test Administrator will provide you with a copy of your test results.

Students are only allowed to take the test 3 times. If you have previously taken the STEP test or an earlier version of the LPN to ADN Transition Program entrance exam, you are NOT eligible to take the RN Fundamental.

Anxiety is common for most test takers. Stress can make the body more alert, consequently improving your performance. For some individuals, stress can be a hindrance and can result in a decrease in concentration. In order to minimize stress while taking a test, please consider the following things:

  • Get plenty of rest the night before taking a test.
  • Eat a well-balanced breakfast or lunch.
  • Arrive 10-15 minutes prior to testing in order to collect your thoughts.
  • Don’t drink too much caffeine. Caffeine can increase your excitability.
  • Think positive! Do not begin testing with negative thoughts. You will do well.
  • Relax!
